Marked by the comfort of a British gastropub with a relaxed vibe and high-quality pub fare, St. James's Well in Port Moody's Newport Village embodies plenty of spirit from the Emerald Isle. The cozy snug is named after the well of St. James, where the water was drawn to make Guinness stout in Dublin, Ireland.

A family run business since July 2012, the pub (affectionately known as The Well among locals) is managed and co-owned by Rylie Ableman, who started out as a busboy in 1999. "I was here for eight years, then took a year off to travel, came back and opened Browns Social House in Langley and the one here in Newport, and have been back at The Well since 2010."

The pub's capacity is 160 (includes standing room), with 100 seats inside and 30 patio seats. With a hands-on and affable approach, Rylie knows a lot of his regular clientele. "We're a lot like Cheers," he says. "Everybody knows everybody's name."

Great local gathering spot in Newport Village

Great British-themed pub in Newport Village! During the Fall and Winter months it is often packed with a casual, yet fun crowd all weekend long. There is live entertainment on the weekends, which can be fun as well. The servers are attentive and the food is generally good (for pub food). I recommend sticking to the more traditional dishes like the stuffed baby yorkies, Guinness soup, shepherd’s pie, and the steak and Guinness pie (my fave!). We were there this past weekend for the first time in awhile and we realized why we love it so much – it’s that comfortable pub down the street when the weather is bad and you don’t feel like cooking!
