While driving around the scenic Caledon Hills with two friends, we stopped for lunch at Tom's Family Restaurant. The service was warm and friendly, the atmosphere comfortable and relaxing, and the food was perfect for our needs - we didn't want an upscale, fancy restaurant, just a casual, friendly place with good food. I had some of the best fish & chips I've ever had. I couldn't resist trying the homemade strawberry-rhubarb pie, and it didn't disappoint - it was heavenly! My two friends were equally pleased with their meals. I would definitely come back to Tom's!
The food was nothing special, it was actually quite bland. The only bad thing about this place is the service. The waitress was inattentive and overall the workers were just unfriendly, so not a place I would want to take my family. I sat at the front near the register and saw how their "home made" fries were just left out the entire hour we were there and grilled when people ordered them. Is that even safe? Plus they sat on the grill which makes you worry about cross contamination. Yuck. Overall, just a very unpleasant experience. But if you enjoy being ignored by wait staff, mediocre food, and attitude when you ask for condiments then this is the place for you.
My friend and I went to Tom's Family Restaurant on the way up north to the cottage and what a pleasant restaurant it was. The service was fantastic! When I placed my order I had specific instructions as to how I wanted my eggs prepared. The waitress was very accommodating and after she served me my meal she came back to make sure it was exactly how I wanted it. The eggs were cooked exactly the way I wanted. The cook even came by to make sure my meal was fine. Now, that's service!! This is a charming family restaurant with great service and great food!! My friend and I were pleasantly surprised and the next time we go up to the cottage we will no doubt make a stop at Tom's Family Restaurant. Very highly recommended!!!
We went to this restuarant expecting to get a home cooked meal with a family atmosphere and that's exactly what we got. The waitress was friendly and very accommodating. When I placed my egg order I was very specific as to how I wanted my eggs prepared and I got exactly what I asked for. After I received my order the waitress came by to make sure my food was prepared to my specifications and even the cook came over to make sure all was good....now that's service!!! If you you want a great home cooked meal in a friendly atmosphere, Tom's Family Restaurant is the place to go!!
We went into this restaurant expecting a nice, family restaurant atmosphere but were extremely disappointed! Arrival: We saw 4 empty tables (all of which were dirty). We chose a table for 2 and had to wait 10 min until the waitress came to clean our table and take our drink order. The waitress was not very pleasant and didn't give us a warm welcoming right from the start. Menu / ordering: In most restaurants, you expect the breakfast menu to include 1 or 2 egg breakfast choices. The only choice here, was the 3 egg breakfast for $7.99 plus tax. This seemed higher than most small diner type breakfast prices but we went for it since there was no other choice. We asked if they had a 2 egg breakfast but we were informed it would be the same price. Both my friend and I ordered the 3 egg breakfast but I ordered my eggs over-easy and she ordered poached. Food: My eggs were brought out before the poached eggs. To be polite, I wasn't going to eat until my friend received her eggs. 5 min later, the waitress came back and said "Sweety, you might as well eat your breakfast or it's going to get cold". Still no poached eggs.... we commented to the waitress that we were waiting for the poached to come and she wait it would be a while. Who goes to a restaurant to watch their friend eat infront of them!? The waitress was very defensive and said they were too busy to have the eggs ready at the same time. Note - at this point, the restaurant was 1/2 empty. Then she said the poached eggs were up so I began eating. It took another 5 min to get the poached eggs and when they came, they were not fully cooked and the homefries were cold. My friend waited for the waitress to come back and after another 5 min, she took them to the counter and asked for the waitresses attention. The waitress ignored her so my friend left them on the counter stating "I'm sorry, these are uncooked, I'm not paying for them." 10 min later, the cook came out and shouted "You ordered them soft" and she said "No, cooked." This escalated from there with the cook not asking what was wrong and being polite to find out what the issue was, but almost screaming that she was lying about her food. Since the food was not there in front of us anymore, we couldn't show him. He wouldn't let her explain or get a word in at all. Then he kicked her out and turned to me loudly stating "You're going to pay for yours". I was eating and not part of any of this discussion and never once said I wouldn't pay. I was fully expecting to pay and did not like being singled out as if I did something wrong. On a side note - my eggs were more hard than over easy and my homefriends had no taste at all. Definitely not worth $7.99 plus tax. Once we received our bills (my full bill plus my friend who was kicked out - she received her bill for her tea), we left and will never be back. Definitely not a family restaurant atmosphere!
