Kittiya has become the fourth unsuccessful restaurant to so sadly occupy this location. Maybe it's the location, perhaps too high rent. Or it could be just the increasingly weak operational and business skills each successive operator brought to this site. Reflecting on the prior occupants here, all had significant challenges that couldn't attract and sustain sufficient business volume to support a successful operation.
Streetsville does not need one more place to eat, but that's about all Kittiya adds to the community, except for being the ideal competitor for other restaurants. We've eaten here twice recently for both lunch and dinner and both times there was just one other table occupied in this 26-seat restaurant. How grim. The menu has all the expected items and the prices are competitive. The interior is still that of the lamentably late Pearl Street Bistro's with a few south Asian blandishments on the walls. The food is basic-Thai, with mostly low levels of seasoning and generally missing the distinctive complexity of flavors that are usually present in the best renderings of that cuisine. At Kittiya you sense that this is someone's first very amateur attempt at restaurant operation. For example, a small order of Coconut Chicken Soup, which was very good and clearly the best item we had, contained more chicken than an order of very ordinary Pad Thai at twice the price. As others wrote, the mains are served one at a time, yet our appetizers were served all at once to the detriment of our enjoyment of the over-cooked and room-temperature deep fried Calamari. It makes me sad to see people make a considerable investment in opening a restaurant and then act as if customers don't matter. A very basic stir-fry should never require a half hour to produce when there are no other customers to serve. When the cook is struggling to produce the food in a timely manner, smart operators advise customers that it will be a few more minutes, clear the appetizer plates, serve a complimentary plate of shrimp chips, a fresh and hot pot of tea, or do something to let the customer know you care about them and truly want (need) them to return. But no, sadly our appetizer plates cluttered the table top throughout the meal and we've learned that long after finishing you have to get up and walk to the bar to perform the financial components of the meal because once the mains are delivered there's no further staff contact. If Kittiya was packed with customers, it would be understandable. Unfortunately, like many others they promote the increasingly encountered feeling we get that most dining out experiences in Mississauga have become a complete waste of time and money.
Please disregard those few negative reviews, there will always be grumpy/negative people. We keep going to Kittiya and we keep introducing friends and business associates who become fans themselves. Yes, plates of food sometimes arrives a few minutes apart from each other, and that is because they are prepared FRESH with no shortcuts!!! If you want instant food, go to a buffet or pre-order for pickup! The chef is absolutely amazing - we often ask her to prepare something new for us, and have gotten to know and appreciate Thai cuisine even more. Thank you, owners of Kittiya!!!
After reading all the positive reviews on here I thought it was worth trying out. I went with my Dad and we entered the dimly lit dining area. There was an unpleasant odor the moment we walk in and lingered throughout the meal, and cheesy karaoke music emanating in the background. The most important thing of the experience is the food and to the contrary of the other reviews, it was abysmal. Everything lacked depth. The beef was dry, the pad thai was made with ketchup, and the food was warm. It was clearly prepared by someone without professional experience. We asked for no shrimp in the pad thai, but it came with it anyways. I am not thai, but I have prepared much better thai food. Do not believe everything I have written, as you should not believe everything the others have said. I say a restaurant is worth trying once, so do as you wish but do not get your hopes up.
