I have been a customer for many years. The quality lately of the food, is unbelievably bad. Now I ordered food tonight and asked that my rice not be hard, and my food fresh. All food was terrible. Rice hard, meat old and dry, and beef not cooked. Egg rolls are smaller. Not worth $60.00. Can’t reach owner. Slowly declining in quality. People will see as time goes by. I keep trying to order hoping it will get better but to no avail.
I ate here often growing up. Made a special trip for birthday take out. A huge disappointment. The egg rolls are still good but the rest of the food was unrecognizable. Paid $94 for 3 small dishes and 8 egg rolls. The Cantonese chow mein was thick goopy noodles absolutely tasteless. The chicken almond guy ding was all celery & onions with chicken so grisly we fed it to the dog. So sad to see this Ottawa landmark go so far downhill:(
Their egg rolls are the best, but costumer service are terrible my god !
Ordered take-out. Chicken fried rice looked like white rice cooked in soya sauce ... NO chicken and VERY over-priced. Egg rolls were very greasy. Have had much better and at a cheaper price. Quality of food is NOT what the media makes it to be.
I don't know what so appealing about this establishment. Honestly, the food in general is insipid. Now granted they have the best eggroll's in town the rest of the food selection is well well below par. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken balls, and the batter fell off immediately once I stick my fork in it. I also order the curry chicken, there was hardly any chicken at all and it lacked flavour. Furthermore, the decors hasn't been changed in 30 years.
FOOD: OK, so everyone I know who has been to GP have ranted and raved about their egg rolls so of course I had to give them a try. The egg rolls themselves are pretty tasty and the accompanying home made plum sauce sets them off perfectly. I wouldn't say they are the "best' but they're definitely worth a try. The next dish I tried was their house specialty fried rice. I don't know the name off-hand but it had generous portions of shrimp, chicken and pork. The portion itself was "adequate" at best. I will say that this dish of fried rice was very tasty indeed. The price was something like $17.00 which is crazy expensive! We also tried the Chow Mein which reminded me of the old-school way where the bean sprouts were the main attraction and the sauce was very good as well. The other dishes consisted of spare ribs (typical taste as in everywhere else) and the obligatory S&S Chicken Balls which again tasted like they do everywhere else. Good, but not spectacular. I will be back, there's no question about that as I do enjoy the egg rolls quite a bit. They're expensive but that's only because of the media portraying them as the next best thing to godliness. SERVICE: I found the service quite rushed and impatient. Our waiter seemed annoyed that we wanted extra time with the menu which he gave us but he returned less than a minute later to see if we were ready to order. Did I mention there were only 6 other people in the restaurant at that time? So why he felt a need to rush us is unexplainable. I don't think the wait staff are permitted to smile as I have yet to see any of them ever smile while taking an order from a table. In fact, in a roundabout way, the service reminded me of that classic Seinfeld episode with the Soup Nazi. My youngest son summed it up best (He was 12 years old at that time) when he said he felt like the waiter was going to slap him if he didn't say his order right. :) The washrooms are a ways away from the dining area. One must go down a very steep flight of stairs and then a long hallway. Almost felt like I need a map to find it. Not the cleanest washrooms either. Other than that, as much as it reads like it was a negative experience, I will be back only because the food is tasty. it's all expensive for no real good reason that I can think of. The staff really should have a better attitude though as it almost feels like I'm bothering them by coming in for a bite to eat. Oh, and make sure to keep a grip on your dish while eating because of the waiter sees it getting low, he'll likely come by and try and take it away even though there's still food on the plate. Like i said, it feels rushed all the time.
Absolutely Terrible....My family and I decided on this establishment for a family pre christmas get together. Huge Mistake. We made reservations 6 weeks in advance for 20 people. Told them at the time, two people are in wheelchairs, they stated 'NO PROBLEM' i guess not for them...however; the moron on the phone failed to tell us that they are NOT handicap accessible. The placed us not in the dining room but in a back room, set up with 'picnic tables' and folding 'metal chairs' also, set up two tables...this way we could not all sit together. Then the waiter stated, 'one bill for 20 people' I'd had enough of this place and we hadnt even ordered. I told them 'separate bills ....or we walk' looking, back...we should have left. The food was at best, considered average. The price charged...double what it was worth. Also, watch your bills...they were adding beer and food to the different bills. Needless to say, we will not be back. Too make it worse, they brought our food at 5:30 then told us there was another party coming at 6pm, we could not finish our food and had to take it with us. Do you think they got a tip?
Apparently this place has been a staple in Ottawa for a long time. I recently was at an event that had food from Golden Palace served. Usually people are somewhat shy about going back for seconds. Not this time! The food was nothing short of amazing. Will definitely have to check out the location next time i'm in town
Staff is rude and are laughing at customers in Mandarin (took a few courses over the years). They are disrespectful and although the food is OK, the prices are way too high. Average food, high prices and loser waiters, why are you going there?
The Golden Palace has just received two new, life long customers. I've almost given up hope, that for really good Chinese food in Ottawa, one would have to either travel to Montreal, or simply order a Pizza. I would have to describe my very first dining experience at The Golden Palace as simply amazing. Well ok, maybe not amazing, but pretty darn close. Well lets start with the most important part, the food. It was without a doubt the best Chinese food, I've ever had, bar none. They diffenetly can indeed stand behind the quality of their food, not to mention their egg rolls, which I'm sure any chinese restuarant, within a hundred mile radius, would find hard to match. Moving on to the infamous "the waitors in their red outfits ", a little stand offish, yes, but I would hardly say rude. As a matter of fact, we gave our waiter, a pretty detailed order, the man didn't even write anything down, and got everything exactly right! There must be some sort of "DoJo" for chinese food waiters, and these men are the Ninja's of the serving world, or serving arts, to be exact. Lastly, with the ambiance, and decor, I would concur that this particular establishment hasn't seen a coat of paint, since Trudeau's first term in office, however, it could only prove that the management, felt the need to concentrate on the the real reason people choose to dine at The Golden Palace, and that would be, the FOOD...not to mention the eggrolls. The Golden Palace, a dining experince, Thirty two years in the making.
I have been eating at GP since i was a kid. At least twice a month, usually take out sometimes eat in. We have always received amazing service, and that doesn't happen often in any restaurant! The Egg Rolls are the city's best, everyone i have ever spoken to about GP has agreed!! In fact a couple of years in a row now a group of us will get a couple dozen egg rolls and have them on Christmas Eve....kind of a tradition we have started.
The Golden Palace still has the best egg rolls I have ever had but is this all they can do? I also ordered 2 chicken fried rice and it was the worst I have ever had. It was burnt. I wasn't sure if the meat in it was actually chicken. It tasted like it was the scrapings from the last night's dishes. I will never go back again. I live in Carleton Place and will not bother to make the trip again, there are better Chinese restaurants in my town.
Thank you so much for the wonderful meal and service, as always I enjoy your food the best. I can't wait til my next visit again and again.
will never go back again, my relatives and myself have been going there for many years, we all agree the quality has slipped greatly, since the older bosses are gone, they are now living off thier name, and the fried rice alway seems burnt
First off, I'm not a big fan of chinese food so this review may or may not be irrelevant. Although the food tasted good, I very seldom eat anything that has been deep fried or heavily saturated with sauces, etc.. so I was not feeling the greatest after my meal. The post-meal pounding headache was a good indication that the food contained MSG. Our service was great though. Our waiter was very helpful, cheery and witty. However, this place is way overpriced. Our bill, with 3 softdrinks, came up to $83. Not including tip.
When it comes to GP, there are two types of people as evidenced by the wide disparity in ratings found here. Those who "get it" and those who don't. If you are looking for true authentic Chinese food and courteous service, then pass on by my friend, the Palace is not for you. The charm of GP rests rather in its ornate ceiling, its mirrored bar and its list of long forgotten cocktails, its hurried windsor-jacketed waiters (my favorite is the one with the afro and studded ear), its wood-panelled extension where, if you are fortunate, you will later be graced by staff finishing their shift over a dish of noodles and, of course, its American-Chinese delicacies. The Palace saw light of day in the 1970s, when Chinese food was about as exotic as it got in terms of "foreign fare" in Ottawa. The menu, except for its inceasing prices, has not changed much over the years. It is in this context that the Palace must be understood. In other words, when you bite into an eggroll you are not only bitting into an eggroll but into a piece of history. If any of this makes sense to you, then you will truly appreciate what the Palace has to offer. Do choose carefully, however, for all dishes are not created equal (both in quantity and flavour). I recommend the Hong Kong Shrimp, an expensive but ever so delish dish. The cigar type egg rolls with their choice of hot mustard and prune sauce is also a must. Ordering them to go is a real treat, they come wrapped up in brown wax paper and are accompanied with sauce containers that vary in style according to quantity ordered.
This place really sucks. The service was horrible when I was there and it was not even busy. I would NEVER tell anyone to vist this place and i will never go back myself.
I have been eating here since i was a child, my first ever non-home made meal was from golden palace and my parents we're eating there long before I was born. Excellent food and service and always have been by far the BEST restaurant all togehter in the city of Ottawa!
OK - so everyone is moaning about the service. True, it leaves a lot to be desired, but to be honest I'm there for the food. The chicken is real chicken breast - not that weird stuff posing as chicken at most chinese places - and it's meat - not fatty tendon stuff uuggk. The egg rolls are A1 and the rest is good. I go here all the time and the food is consistently good and the service is consistently... brief.
SERVICE IS USUALLY SPOT ON AND FRIENDLY. THE EGG ROLLS RAISE THE BAR SO HIGH I SERIOUSLY DOUBT ANY OTHER RESTAURANT CAN TOP THEM (THAT GOOD!). THE REST OF THE MENUE DESERVES TO BE EXPLORED, WHEN A RESTAURANT USES BREAST MEAT ONLY IN THEIR CHICKEN DISHES IT SHOULD BE NOTED AS A RARE OCCURRENCE IN TODAY'S MANY CHINESE RESTAURANTS. THE DECOR HAS A COMFORTABLE FEEL TO IT, THEN THE WAITERS IN RED JACKETS COMPLETE THE PICTURE. JUST GO....
