“It was always a dream of mine to have my own restaurant," says Shelagh, co-owner of Los Cabos Cantina and Grill, alongside her husband Darren. Her life in the restaurant business began with her mom and dad. “My parents had a restaurant in Whitby, from 1962 to 1971, and I always loved it.”
Today, Shelagh’s taken on the role of restaurateur and working the front-of-house at the Mexican-themed spot, while still cooking in the kitchen on occasion. “There’s nothing in particular that I love about the business," she laughs. "It’s everything!”
Shelagh created all the recipes for the many dishes Los Cabos serves. They’re all personal versions of recipes she learned during her eight years living in the American Southwest. “Being in California, I had a chance to pick a lot of people’s brains,” Shelagh says. “I learned how to make a lot of different stuff. When we came back here to Whitby, we decided to bring what we learned with us.” And so, Los Cabos Cantina and Grill was born.

We take our finest seafood selections (crab, shrimp, scallops) roll them in soft corn tortillas and envelope them in a creamy tomatillo sauce. Served with refried beans and rice

The food is very good, fresh and definitely homemade. The staff/owners are very friendly and wonderful with kids. Child meals are large enough for 2 kids to share, and come with an ice-cream dessert! Love the bright coloured decor and the ceramic topped tables, very mexican very vibrant, and I really like it when they play mellow mexican music, I can stay all day! I've also been there in the evening for drinks and appetizers out on the patio, it was a very relaxing evening, enjoyed it very much and can't wait to go back when the warm weather returns.
Attentive waitstaff and awesome food. A great selection of hot sauces as well is at your table. From mild to fire. Fajitas were just fantastic. Nachos were great as well. Became our go-to place for Mexican. Highly recommend it. Kinda small place, so if you are going on Valentines Day or something reservations would be a good idea...
This is my favourite Mexican restaurant in Whitby! Great food and great service. We like taking the kids here for supper from time to time when we are in the mood for Mexican. Highly recommended.
