Bonnie Gordon may be an internationally recognized, award-winning cake designer, but she doesn't have a lot of time for making wedding cakes at present. She's too busy running the Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts, an accredited career college.
Bonnie worked in museums for years, a sensible placement given her background in Fine Arts. But she longed for the opportunity to express herself creatively. Never one for complacency, she found an outlet that allowed for artistic growth while indulging her love of tackling new challenges.
"Creative people need a creative outlet. It was like a eureka moment when I discovered cake design", she recalls. "You can make very beautiful things out of food."
Bonnie spent a year taking professional cake decorating courses in Toronto. She quickly realized, however, that there was so much more to learn. Courses in Toronto were very industry based with limited opportunity for creative expression. She began taking courses abroad, eventually interning in NYC, which became the turning point in her career.
"Cake decorating came naturally to me because I had a degree in Fine Arts. I could make cakes that look like art because I'd studied painting and sculpture. Cake design is painting and sculpture combined," Bonnie says.
Bonnie established herself as a cake designer in Toronto, but her fans weren't content to buy her creations. "People kept asking me to teach them." The demand was so great that after five years in the two-story studio she'd opened on Eglinton she moved to the large, beautiful campus on Caledonia Road where the school stands today.
