A Tandoor is a clay oven fired by hardwood charcoal. It opens at the top and meat is lowered into the oven on
skewers while the Nan breads are baked stuck to the inner side of its walls. The enclosed heat slowly and
simultaneously bakes, roasts, grills and smokes food, making the Tandoori meat well-done yet juicy and soft with
a "smoky" flavour. The other secret that makes the Tandoor meat so delicious is the special herb and spice yogurt
marinade in which the meat or seafood is marinated for more than twenty-four hours. We are one of the few
restaurants in Canada who may boast of their own authentic, imported Tandoor.

The Butter Chicken is my favourite. Good quality ingredients are used at Tara I think. The bread at Tara is also something to get....
1hr+ after delivery being due I called and was asked if I could pick my order up but since Im visiting from out of town it wasnt doable. They amazingly made arrangements to have someone bring my overdue, forgotten order but they wanted my credit card number first. I was skeptical and explained why but finally agreed as my family had been waiting hours. Food arrived and was amazing. I called back to express thanks and he said: I dont talk to you and hung up Thats not how you treat customers
Beyond Great Food!! This is the go to for spoiling yourself with flavours!! Best Indian food I know of. Best staff, friendly. One of the owners is always there making sure the food and service are up to snuff! I’ve eaten her for at least 10 years and hope to eat here for 40 more!
Extremely disappointed tonight, thought Id treat myself and hubby to a Lovely Indian meal with takeout after i finished my shift . I work in homecare in Innisfil so made the long drive in between clients on a break , to pick it up for after work .I ordered a chicken Korma, rice and a garlic Nan . paid the hefty price of $33 and left .Get home to eat and the rice dish not even half full, garlic nan just nan with bits of garlic on it , no yummy butter,Korma not great at all.Very sad,not a patch on T
It's been hit and miss with this place for me. Lately though it's just miss. I don't know if the chef has changed, but the quality of the food definitely has, and not for the better. The last time I ordered takeout, $85 worth, I ended up pitching it all in the rubbish. It wasn't even palatable for my dog. It's unfortunate, because I've been once before when the food was terrific. The service however, has always been atrocious lol
Very nice place..romantic..food its amazing and the people who work there also..just beutiful
This is the best Indian cuisine I have ever experienced. The restaurant is beautiful and clean, the staff is attentive and food was served is a reasonable time. My meal was fabulous as dinner companion's meal. This is a place I would go out of my way to experience food this delicious and excellently prepared. Owner went from table to table to ensure everyone was happy with their meal. Five Stars doesn't seem enough for Tara Indian Cuisine.
Absolutely the best Indian food I have ever had! I will gladly return every time I'm in town!
A terrible waste of money. Bad tasting indian food, horrible customer service.... overly expensive take out and the manager doesn't know how to make a customer happy.
We visited for the lunch buffet in Sept 2009 after a disappointing 1st visit , in order to give them another chance. sadly, very disappointed again and will not return. We love Indian food but are not impressed with Tara and can't understand how they are nominated one of the best in Barrie. Food was not hot. Rice was not cooked and each bite would have some "crunch' to it. They ran out of the Tandoori Chicken and seemed insulted when I advised them that more was needed. Channa Masala was mild, boring and could have come out of a bottle. Enough chances. Will not return and certainly will not recommend to others.
My husband and I used to eat a lot of Indian food when we lived in Toronto. We moved recently to Barrie and were pleased with "Tara Indian Cuisine's" reviews. I was told it would take 45mins to 1hour delivery and a charge of $4.50 would be applied. No problem. Over 1hr and 30mins later our food arrived. And the order was wrong. We were so hungry we didn't even call to complain. While we were eating we also realized the chickpeas in the channa masala weren't fully cooked. Lastly, the amount of onion used was crazy. Trust me, I know how much onion is used in Indian food, but this was excessive. An entire onion per dish. It was gross. The worst part is I have a $50 gift certificate that I "won" on simcoe auctions and it can only be used in the store.
I am a regular at Tara, and for good reason, the food is amazing the staff are friendly and though the prices seem to jump every time we go there it is still reasonable. Just know in advance very slow service, but the food will arrive fresh and hot, worth the wait. Great restaurant would recommend to anyone!!
Best Indian food in Barrie, bar none. Great Service and Perfect atmosphere. No complaints here!
It was very good food i recamend to other people to go and try it is the best. They have your choice hot or mild and more diffrent food and any thing if you were vegatarian salad meat lover many meat and firendly staff.Tara indian cusin rocks.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We haven't been to this restaurant in years, but I figure my review will still be worth something. We've been here twice. The first time we visited was on Valentine's Day for dinner. Our first impression was not too great. Along with three or four other couples, we were kept standing by the front door for well near one hour (if not more) while we stared and waited for other patrons to leave. The most annoying thing about the experience was that we had made reservations beforehand. My definition of making a reservation at a restaurant means that a table will be reserved and waiting for you at your requested time, so there will be a minimal or no wait time when you get there. Otherwise what's the point of making a reservation if you'll just be treated like any other walk-in. The place was crowded, warm, stuffy, but the food, when it finally came, was very good. It was because of the taste and quality of the food that we decided to return a second time (we're suckers for punishment!) a few months later (on a non-holiday) and this time were seated much sooner. Again, the food was delectable. However, I remember they charged around $5 for a couple of tiny samosas, where there's a much more casual and equally authentic Indian place in Markham where you can get gigantic and delicious samosas for only about 25 cents each. But, I guess that's what you pay for Indian fine dining. Overall, as others here have said, the food is excellent but the service is lacking and unapologetic.
As far as Indian food goes, this is my abosolute favorite and I've eaten at many Indian restaurants throughout Toronto and the GTA. Service is always very friendly but hit and miss with timing. The only complaint is that I wish they would put a little money into upgrading the dining room and the washrooms. Otherwise, a must go if you enjoy Indian food!
I miss the best Naan bread I've ever eaten from this restaurant. I discovered Tara in 1989, when I lived in Orillia, 1/2 hour away. Now I live 2 1/2 hrs away and still go out of my way to eat here every chance I get. I persuade everyone I meet to remember Tara when they drive through to cottage country. So much better than a hamburger. I've eaten here alone many times and enjoyed the food tremendously. I don't mind sharing because I when I reorder, the food comes quickly. Nice people and great value. Vegan dishes are very tasty too. The spicy cures the common cold....whatever the weather. I just read other reviews at this site and can add that I was spontaneously invited into the kitchen to see Naan cooked in the tandori on a slow afternoon. The kitchen was clean and organized. I have no concerns about this restaurant.
Food is always great. We have been visiting this restaurant since it opened about 20 years ago. Although prices are a little steep, you get enough curry for 3 meals. We often just have take-out and eat curry all weekend!Owners are very friendly.
Categorically the worst Indian food I have ever eaten. Other positive critics in these reviews need to try eating at a decent restaurant. Abhorred at the price and disgusted with the quality of the cuisine.
Probably one of the best restaurants in Barrie, the Chef was marvelous and very friendly as were the waiters. I am surprised at the service complaints as our food arrived in time and we were greeted very warmly. The decor was decent and the kitchen seemed spic and span when we went. Definately will return on my next trip to Barrie.
