The Beloved Dog

Prior to taking ownership of The Beloved Dog in 2014, Stephanie spent five years in Toronto and Calgary slowly turning her favourite hobby into her dream job. “I was a dog groomer and a dog walker in Toronto for about four years and absolutely loved it. I’d had various jobs in all kinds of industries but hadn’t really found a fit. I did know that I had always loved having animals around me,” says Stephanie.

“Initially, grooming and walking dogs was just something I did as a hobby. But I quickly realized I wanted to make it a true career. It helped that people started asking me to watch their dogs while they were away. Friends told friends and the word spread. Finally I had found my passion; this was something I needed to do full-time.”

Stephanie went on to gain experience at a doggie daycare in Calgary, where she worked with a trainer and learned the ins and outs of dog behaviour. “There’s this misconception that we just cuddle dogs all day," says Stephanie. "Well, ok, we do,” she admits with a laugh. “But there is more to it than that. Once you understand dog behaviour, observing how they interact with each other in a pack, it’s the most interesting thing. Well, to me anyways.” Knowledgeable and passionate: definitely traits to look for in your dog’s caregiver.

When Stephanie left Calgary for Vancouver, she quickly met Lisa, the original owner of The Beloved Dog and an equally compassionate dog lover, who happened to be looking for someone to take over the company. “It was an incredible opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Lisa has an amazing client base, and the dogs have been so wonderful and welcoming. It’s such a great feeling!”
