For as long as he can remember, Gary has had a green thumb. “It’s probably genetic. My mother showed me how to propagate spider plants and African violets when I was a kid and that’s probably what sparked a lifelong interest in growing plants,” says Gary.
While completing a Masters in Botany at UBC in 2004, Gary recognized a great opportunity when he came across a little nursery for sale. Just two short weeks later, he became the owner of Phoenix Perennials. His business has since established itself as an awarding-winning nursery featuring one of the largest selections of plants in all of Canada.
“Today, we are the most exciting and most respected retail nursery in the Lower Mainland," says Gary. "Because we are specialists with a huge selection of over 4,000 plants, we are a destination nursery for the whole province. And since we started doing our mail-order service, we are becoming well-known across Canada.”
