Vancouver's Gold Star Shoe Rebuilders is a local success story. The business has been under its current ownership since 1982, and Shayla Heggs is the company’s long-time, shoe-loving manager.
In Shayla's opinion, the shoe repair business is an advocate for sustainable living. She's seen an dramatic increase in the number of clients who are committed to repairing rather than tossing out footwear. Her enthusiasm is contagious. “I am a thrifty shopper by nature and I don’t like to throw things away,” she says.
Shayla is eager to see people purchase quality footwear that can be repaired. She points out, “The investment will last many years, which translates into saving money and sparing shoes from being thrown out. We can learn a lot from seniors, like my Nana, who saved and cared for many of their possessions. We need to continue to pass on these values to our children.”
