In 1996, Lili Derk and Greg Wold were contemplating what to call their new graphic design and communications company. The pair had worked in the industry for the previous four years and were ready to take on their own clients and projects. They had been stewing over a name for several weeks when out of the blue, a mid-flight seagull let go of its afternoon snack and a purple starfish landed smack on their doorstep! Starfish Communications was born.
“We wanted a unique and contemporary name with a West Coast feel. Something fresh, in a salty sea air kind of way. And of course, something hinting at the kind of ‘star quality’ service we’d provide our clients,” says Lili.
The pair creates compelling and engaging print (posters, brochures, business cards) and web design for all sorts of businesses in Vancouver and also internationally. Maintaining numerous industry connections, they will often manage large-scale projects by contracting out portions to web developers, printers, photographers and other specialists with whom they have strong relationships and special rates.
