"Do you want to receive our texts?" Cameron Elder, owner of Cameron Hair Studio, asks a customer who is primping her newly minted bob cut. The technological convenience Cameron offers his clientele complements the salon's gallery aesthetic, with its inspired white-walled, birch-floored open space.
Inside, a steady stream of customers sip on complimentary cappuccinos and freshly brewed teas from the salon's beverage bar, and the hum of blow-dryers forms a backtrack to the staccato rhythm of the overhead music. Cameron prides himself on offering a relaxed atmosphere where the work stands for itself.
Having enjoyed fashion since his teens when he would dress "a bit out there," Cameron attended hairdressing school in Hamilton before undertaking an apprenticeship with his mentor Robert and working at other Hamilton salons to master the craft. In November of 2013 he was able to open his own salon. "Opening Cameron Hair Studio was a natural progression for me after having worked in the business for 15 years," Cameron says, explaining his interest in refining the business skills he'd acquired. "I had the privilege to work with knowledgeable and experienced people who ignited my passion for the craft," he continues. Cameron's first haircut was performed on his grandmother in his bedroom at home. "I kept cutting it shorter and shorter because I couldn't keep it straight. She was gracious. I cut a lot off," he laughs.
