You won’t see Paul Morris on screen in Breakaway, but some of his company’s custom jerseys play starring roles in the 2011 hockey flick.
Unlike the Canadian box-office bust, Big Stick has been a huge hit since Paul started the business out of his home in 1996. “I was always in arenas as a player and saw a lot of bad jerseys,” Paul explains. “Heck, I wore a lot of bad jerseys. So I thought, ‘I can do better than that.’ I learned how to sew and print, and it just got bigger from there.”
The turning point came in 1999, he says, when BigStick.ca went live. Almost overnight, the company went from a part-time one-man venture to an international operation that has steadily added staff to its no-frills basement headquarters on Toronto’s Dundas St. W.
