Alberta Burger Fest continues to grow bigger, better and beefier. This year’s saucy, savoury event features more participating restaurants than ever – an impressive 104. Competing patty purveyors in this customer-judged event are serving uniquely delectable burgers in three price categories from May 6 to 15, 2016. Here we highlight a selection of eateries building $10 burgers.
This cheerful Edmonton Trail diner keeps its loyal customers happy with a hearty and decadent selection of burgers including the mini-corn-dog-topped Don’t Fear the Reaper Burger. As rich and complex as the Reaper, the Boogie’s BFF Burger features a beef patty dressed with bacon, lettuce, tomato and a shopping list of further ingredients that includes house-special red sauce and an over-easy egg.
The culinary hand behind the nationally acclaimed Model Milk and Pigeon Hole, chef Justin Leboe is also the menu master of this 17th Avenue Southwest burger bar. The Clive Burger festival entry takes its sustainably produced fast food in a Latin direction with the Mexi-Clive Burger. Served with a choice of beef or spicy black bean veggie patty, these babies have bite. Condiments include house-made pico de gallo, jalapeno jack cheese, Clive sauce and fried corn tortilla.
Tacos and mezcal are the hot commodities at Native Tongues in Beltline. Expanding upon its Mexican menu, the restaurant’s Hamburguesas Rellenas or The Pickle Burger, is its Burger Fest take on Mexico City’s very popular street-stall burgers. Its ground-chuck patty is stuffed with American cheese (also known as processed cheese) and grilled over charcoal. It sports a condiment combo of pickles, lettuce and a secret sauce concoction, and this sandwich’s supple sombrero is a house-made sesame seed bun.
A pub and live alternative music venue, Dickens is located on the far west end of downtown Calgary. A song-and-suds spot happily existing outside the mainstream, its beef-burger alternative contest entry is the Ginger Citrus Tuna Burger. On a pretzel bun, the burger’s yellowfin tuna patty is stacked with lettuce and tomato and a condiment complement of lemon yogurt, green onion and ginger.
Busy wee Kensington burger hut Flipp’n Burger presents the Flipp'n Backyard BBQ Burger as its Alberta Burger Fest entry. A backyard barbecue party on a bun, this sunny, savoury fistful of summer fun features two barbecue-sauced beef patties on a ciabatta bun. Toppers include green coleslaw, French onion dip and ripple chips. You supply the sunscreen!
Located in the Calgary Farmers’ Market, Sandwiched naturally draws super-fine ingredients from fellow market vendors, serving rich and rewarding sandwich creations that change with the seasons. Its Burger Fest entry is The Grilled Cheese... Burger. A real beauty, its locally raised ground beef patty is bathed in sweet-and-spicy sauce and nestled between grilled-cheese-style locally baked potato bread. Also in there, are sweet pickles, caramelized onions and three cheeses – cheddar, Havarti and mozzarella. Dip-able mustard and ketchup are served on the side.
Winner of the 2015 $10 category, this Dragon’s Lair happens to be located in the magical kingdom of Westbrook Mall. Suiting its mythic name, the burgers you’ll find at this restaurant are the stuff of foodie fantasy. The Italian Stallion is a special contest creation that brackets a sausage and Parmesan frittata between two lean Alberta beef patties, all within an Italian-style toasted bun. Topped with bacon, cheese and secret sauce, its contents sit atop a bed of hickory sticks and Caesar salad.
