When it comes to planning a business lunch, finding the perfect spot can be a challenge. You need a place that’s not too noisy, with reasonable wait times and efficient service. And of course, it’s an added bonus if the food and atmosphere impress the people you’re meeting with, whether they’re colleagues, partners or clients. These Halifax restaurants have been tried, tested and approved by the city’s movers and shakers.
Nestled in a beautiful old building in the historic waterfront area, McKelvie’s has been around for a long time. Locals know you can always expect great service and a solid meal there, especially when it comes to seafood, as the restaurant maritime decor suggests. It has a wonderful atmosphere for business lunches, and it’s walking distance from most downtown offices.
Salty’s has the best restaurant real estate in Halifax, hands down. It overlooks the whole harbour, so it’s a great place to take visiting business associates who don’t often make it to Nova Scotia. Salty’s is an institution, and you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Although they specialize in seafood chowder, there are lots of non-seafood dishes to choose from. Try to get a table on the wharf in the summertime for a truly scenic view.
If you’re looking for something that isn’t run-of-the-mill, this is a great place to take foodies. The Goat’s menu is definitely original and very creative, so everyone in your party is bound to find something they’ve never had before. Some tables offer privacy for more confidential or sensitive business discussions, so be sure to put in a special request if that’s what you’re looking for.
This hotel restaurant stands out because of the location; Harbourstone is just steps away from the two iconic Purdy’s Wharf office towers on the Halifax waterfront, making it a great locale for a business lunch. The food is excellent, too, especially for a hotel lobby bar. Try one of the hearty salads, or a delicious sandwich and, if appropriate, wash it all down with something local from the drink menu.
This Greek diner is always filled with business people at lunch hour. It’s been around for more than 50 years, and it’s no wonder – the food is served steaming hot, with friendly service. The best deal is the massive Greek combo plate (which I challenge you to finish), but I like to get the souvlaki and save some room for their homemade baklava – it’s to die for!
Burger lovers, you’ve found your perfect match. This chic, retro diner right at the Armdale Rotary (and overlooking the picturesque Northwest Arm) is inexpensive and delicious, making it exactly where you want to go if you’re hosting a business lunch on a budget. This kid-friendly spot is popular with families, but you should be able to avoid unruly children during the workweek.
Arguably the best Thai restaurant in Halifax, I especially like to go here for a midday meal. Lunch specials are only $8.99, which soup, salad, and a main dish with. They occasionally offer a lunchtime buffet, which is a great idea for those with big appetites. Looking for something on the lighter side? I suggest the lettuce wraps, which can be a meal all by themselves.
Although it might be better known by the younger crowd for its rooftop patio nightlife than its food, The Argyle is the perfect place for a lunch meeting, especially in the summertime when you can sit outside. I love their pizzas, and their service is fast and efficient. They gladly do take-out, too, so don’t hesitate to grab something to go if you’d prefer to eat back at the office.
Completely redesigned and renovated in late 2014, the Arms is a Halifax classic. With Union Jacks everywhere and big leather chairs, it’s comfortable, cozy and inviting. Working lunches that tend to run a bit long, are ideal here, because you can spread out and settle in with lots of space. Shepherd’s pie and chicken potpie are comfort food favourites, especially during the colder winter months.
Definitely a more formal, pricey option, the Five Fisherman (often referred to as “Five Fish” by locals) is known as the go-to upscale seafood restaurant in downtown Halifax. Work celebrations, milestones or special occasions are best marked here, unless you’re always a big spender. They have a wonderful wine selection too, with in-house sommeliers to recommend the perfect glass to pair with your meal.
