A delicious, savoury pie filled with various types of meat and veggies, and typically topped with gravy. Does it get any better? Most commonly from the U.K., Europe, South Africa, New Zealand and Canada, there are many ways you can make ‘em, but there’s only two ways to enjoy them: With a fork and knife or with your hands.
This Scottish whisky bar makes traditional chicken pie, as well as a mean steak and mushroom pie. Both are served with side salad and whole baby carrots, so it’s very filling. The pies are so full, the gravy oozes out, and never mind the taste. The steak and mushroom is my personal go-to and it never disappoints.
Their sweet and savoury pies are sold across Alberta, but Edmontonians can be sure to get their fix at the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market on Saturdays. Their varieties are perfection with every bite: classic turkey, chicken curry, beef stroganoff or the classic French Canadian meat pie, tourtièrre. Everything is made by hand and by the “Cuties” themselves. Their flaky, buttery pastry is to die for, truly.
As their name suggests, their pies are all homemade and delicious. You can buy them frozen or ready-to-eat, depending on your needs. They make a hellava turkey pot pie, savoury beef, chicken and ham, steak and kidney, lamb and, of course, creamy salmon and smoked cod. There are several other varieties as well, so be sure to visit Little Jack and the crew at Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market and City Market year-round.
They specialize in Middle Eastern foods, like shawarma, and they bake their own pitas in-house, which people buy in bulk because they are so good. They prepare sfeha meat fatayer, which is an Arab meat pie, and is quite amazing. Their pie is somewhat open on top so you can see the rare meat in the centre and, of course, you eat it with your hands.
This list wouldn’t be complete without including Vi’s. The chicken pot pie is one of the best in the city, and if it’s not world famous, it should be. And, don’t forget to have one of their amazing pies for dessert!
This is a South African shopping experience in Edmonton. The company, which entered into a franchise agreement with Serengeti Outlet Edmonton, offers up a variety of South African products from groceries to gift baskets, meats and much more. They also prepare fresh and hot meat pies every Saturday, so this is definitely the day to visit.
