No matter how good your coffee is at home, sometimes it’s just nice to go out. Whether you’re grabbing your cup of joe on your daily morning commute, or are looking for a place where you can sit down on a Sunday morning and spend a few hours poring over the paper and catching up on emails, this list has you covered. Set the alarm early, because coffee is calling, and these places know how to do it right!
This place is just as it sounds – a little cozy spot with seats in all the nooks. They have a great selection of coffees and teas, and better yet, a tasty menu with both vegan and vegetarian options. If you want to have the lunch sandwiches though, be sure to go after 11 when they change over the menu.
It’s not unusual for there to be a lineup for opening hour at this bakery and coffee shop: everyone wants to get the doughnuts before they sell out. And when the flavours include Acadian Maple with Smoked Bacon and Triple Chocolate, it’s no wonder they sell out. Personally, I go for the coffee and the rooftop patio. But the patio is usually full too. Can you tell you need to show up early here?
People flock from near and far for the croissants at Two if By Sea, better known to the locals as TIBS. Made fresh daily, with a daily rotation of flavours, these giant pastries are perfect with their freshly brewed coffee for breakfast or an afternoon snack. But don’t leave it too late because the croissants sell out almost every day!
With their coffee small-batch roasted right in the province, it’s no wonder this coffeehouse has a lineup to get brew most of the time. The good news is though, there are two locations to get your fix, and they always have lots of delicious treats (often from their sister companies) to tide you over while you wait for your cup of joe.
If you’re a student, you come here for the study-friendly atmosphere. Otherwise, you come for the great coffee and just a quiet place to hang out and read a book or catch up on the daily news. You might struggle to get a table at exam time, but the coffee is just as good on the go as sitting down!
Beer by night and coffee by day – you can’t go wrong at Lion and Bright, no matter what time you go. There are 6 to 8 craft beers on tap and more in the fridge, and the coffee is always fresh and brewing. And the best part is, they’re attached to a bakery and market sourcing local veggies and fresh homemade bread.
Voted best coffee and specialty coffee in Halifax, this one couldn’t be left off the list. You can get your coffee at one of their four locations around the city, but more importantly, you’ll want to enjoy it with something from their delicious menu, featuring breakfast, lunch and bakery treats.
A Nova Scotia start up, Just Us has their own roastery in the Annapolis Valley and has now opened several locations across the country. They’re all about ethically sourced fair trade coffee and tea, local, organic treats and a great place to sit and hang out. Not to mention, their own homemade delicious chocolate. Trust me, you’ll be back.
A higher-end coffee shop, the Stubborn Goat doesn’t brew drip coffee on the weekends. Instead, stop in and order some of their specialty roasts in single serving cups, brewed just for you. With two locations and lots of great seasonal latte creations, you’ll walk out happy every time, no matter where you are in the city!
Here’s a secret: The other Bean is the owner’s dog who you’ll often see hanging out at this quaint little coffee shop on Quinpool Road. So whether you go to visit the dog or to try one of the great treats on the café menu, you’re sure to leave happy and full. Or just covered in dog slobber with coffee breath.
