There is nothing better than the taste (and smell) of freshly baked food. Whether it is a warm loaf of bread, or a sweet, delectable pastry, bakeries are a great place to try out both new creations, as well as some classic favourites. Thankfully, Halifax has a great selection of bakeries, no matter what you’re looking for. Here’s a list of some of the best bakeries in the city, that people just can’t stay away from!
If you’re in the south end of the city, you have to stop by Gingerbread Haus. Located on Queen Street, they bring the bakery styles of Germany and Austria to Halifax. They have a small dining area, and a menu full of breads, pastries and cakes, as well as a lunch menu that consists of soups, salads and sandwiches made from your choice of bread. If you’ve got a bit of a sweet tooth, go with one of their “made from scratch” truffles, made with real Belgian chocolate.
The Italian Market is a place that seems to do it all. The have a full menu comprised of pasta, soups, sandwiches, and pizza, as well as offering many different catering options. The highlight here though, is their bakery where they create works of art for both the eyes and the mouth. They whip up everything from cakes to pies to pastries, and they even make some pretty great bread. A must-try is their raspberry torte, which is three layers of vanilla sponge cake that is layered with raspberry jam, and then finished with a buttercream icing.
Bringing the tastes of Paris to Halifax is Le French Fix. The intimate interior immediately captures your attention due to the delicious aromas of tasty baked goods wafting through the air. Each creation here is elegant in appearance, and each one is made to perfection. They offer a wide range of items including coffee, croissants, and desserts, but the star of the show has to be their macarons. These brightly colored treats are made with a sweet almond meringue, and can be filled with ganache, butter cream or jam. Definitely a must try if you pop in for a visit!
Located in the Hydrostone Market is Julien’s Patisserie, Bakery & Café. Winning multiple Best of Food Awards from The Coast, Julien’s has definitely made its mark on locals over the last 20+ years. With an impressive selection to choose from, it is almost impossible to leave here without buying more than you need. Worth noting is their huge list of different breads that they bake, including an apricot hazelnut sourdough made with dried apricots and hazelnuts. Julien’s is worth a visit, even if it is just to stare at the mouth-watering food they make!
