Sandwiches: savoury, succulent, scrumptiousness held together with the best of breads and buns – a good sandwich is incomparable, immeasurable and invaluable. A gourmet sandwich is so much more than mom’s PB&J or a quick baloney and cheese; it’s a beacon of comfort and contentedness. Edmonton has some stellar sandwich offerings –you just need to know where to look.
A little hole in the wall shop on 109 Street in Edmonton’s Garneau neighbourhood, Farrow serves up mind-blowingly awesome gourmet sandwiches (and they make pretty fabulous cookies, too). Their four sandwich selections rotate and generally run for a couple days at a time, but are always creative (and entertainingly named) and are sure to cause serious cravings. Check out Farrow’s Instagram feed for current offerings.
With locations downtown and on the west end, Sandwich & Sons is a deli-style joint that serves six signature sandwich selections with homemade chips. Everything from mustard to pickles is made in-house, and they offer catering, too. Their Montreal smoked meat sandwich is dubbed “the real deal” and their grilled cheese (old cheddar, smoked gouda, monetary jack and artichoke spread on sourdough) will make you salivate.
An old school style diner in High Street, just off 124 Street, Urban Diner provides the ultimate classic sandwich selection: diner meatloaf, Ruben, grilled cheese, beef dip, pulled pork, clubhouse and the Monte Cristo. While all of their sandwiches are mouthwatering, the Monte Cristo is the most phenomenal sandwich ever (egg dipped and served with jam and sour cream).
If you’re downtown around 104 Street and Jasper Avenue and looking for a great sandwich, Blue Plate Diner will kill your craving beautifully. In addition to offering an exceptional chicken and smoked cheddar club sandwich, a jalapeño grilled cheese and a barbecue meatloaf sandwich, the Blue Plate’s long-standing champion is their open-faced tuna melt. This particular sandwich has been on the menu forever and is always a popular, satisfying choice.
Located just off Whyte Avenue, the Next Act Pub is definitely known for their burgers, but they make some delicious sandwiches, too. From the meat brisket donair (featuring brisket from their sister restaurant, Meat) to your classic (and beautifully affordable) steak sandwich, the Next Act also offers two chicken sandwiches, a tofu sandwich, a fish sandwich and a fantastic grilled cheese (which comes with apples and bacon!).
