The Edmonton Street Performers Festival takes place in Sir Winston Churchill Square July 8 to 17, 2016. Performances start at 11:30 a.m. and finish with a Troupe du Jour variety show at 10 p.m. If you need a bite to eat or a drink after a full day of watching shows, these spots are all located downtown, fairly close the square.
It’s been a fixture of downtown Edmonton since 1987, and it remains popular to this day. The pub is a cool place to chill out after a long day, and throw back a few pints. It’s a British pub, and it’s known as the “home of the true pint” for its 20-ounce draught beers, served at the ideal temperature. The menu is traditional pub food, such as fish and chips, but it’s done well. Plus, it’s within walking distance of Churchill Square.
With 72 microbrewed beers on tap, plus bottled beer, wine, mead and cocktails, there is no shortage of drink options at The Underground Tap & Grill. That makes it an ideal spot for big groups of friends – there’s something for everyone here, plus it’s within walking distance of the festival. Head over after catching some great theatre, then enjoy sampling a variety of drinks or one of the fun appetizers, such as adobo buffalo duck wings, mac and cheese balls or pretzel bites.
Located downtown, within walking distance of the festival, Craft Beer Market is a great place to enjoy a cold beer on tap after a hot day of watching street performers. They have more than 100 beers on tap – no bottled beer to be found here! There is also a pretty decent food menu that features sophisticated comfort food made from scratch. Plus, there’s plenty of seating, with a main level, a mezzanine and a patio.
This rustic-chic country-style restaurant is not only gorgeous but also farm-to-table. The food is locally sourced, the menu changes seasonally and the chef, Blair Lesback, is widely celebrate. The restaurant has received honours from Avenue, Enroute, Where and Western Living for a reason – the cuisine is creative and decadent but also deliciously simple. Plus, they’re open till midnight Monday to Saturday, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy a bite to eat after the final Festival curtain closes.
This Italian spuntini (snack) bar is open Tuesday to Saturday from 5 p.m. till late, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a high-quality snack or beverage after a full day of festival fun. It’s located on Jasper Avenue, right next to its sister restaurant, Corso 32, so it’s not too far from Churchill Square. They have a fantastic selection of salumi and formaggi if you’d like to create your own charcuterie board or tasting plate. Plus, their condiments are out of this world – try the truffle and black pepper honey.
Located on Jasper Avenue, Cactus Club Café is within easy driving distance of Churchill Square. The gorgeous heated patio is great, rain or shine, but there’s also a bar and dining room area. Their cocktail menu is fantastic, particularly their blended drinks, such as the peach Bellini. But, they also have a good variety of wine and beer. And, the menu is versatile enough to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters, whether they are craving a snack or a full meal.
