La Tortilleria is a prime example of the little store that could. The Mexican restaurant and market opened in 2008 out of a tiny location in Kensington Market. “It started as a small business venture with a very clear goal to bring fresh and authentic Mexican food to Toronto,” says store manager Maria Ayala. “This was a great neighbourhood because the people here are always looking for new and exciting foods to explore.” La Tortilleria’s mix of fresh food and store-made tortillas became a hit and it has now expanded to three locations.
La Tortilleria is both a restaurant and grocery store. The taco house serves up popular dishes like their signature Tacos Los Campechanos, featuring steak and chorizo sausage. While you’re waiting for your tacos you can do some shopping and pick up salsa, spices and their famous tortillas. Then sit back and enjoy your dinner or drinks. Maria says, “It’s a casual spot to get together with friends and enjoy some tacos and feel like a little bit of Mexico in Toronto.”
