Lula Lounge has established itself as the go-to venue in Toronto for world-music, Latin-jazz, salsa dancing, and an unmatched big-band concert experience. The stage also hosts classical music, spoken word and burlesque performances. “Basically anything that doesn’t have a home in the greater Toronto scenes, they find a little bit of a home here,” says co-owner, Jose Ortega.
Jose has been providing a home for Toronto’s eclectic music scene since 2000 when he began throwing parties in his old apartment, just a few blocks from Lula’s current location. He recalls asking his friend Mike Sobreira to provide salsa lessons to some friends gathering in his loft. “The first Monday night eight people came. And then the following Monday night twelve people came, and it just grew,” he recalls. Friends of friends returned week after week bringing food and drinks until the weekly salsa gatherings took on a life of their own.
Seeing the potential, Jose and his business partner, Jose Nieves, established a not-for-profit artistic collective called Open City — a confluence of artists, spoken word, music, food and dancing. Their first party attracted over 700 people and after two years of operating out of Jose’s apartment, the business partners decided they needed a proper venue.

Chimichurri Beef
Grilled strips of tender, seasoned flank steak, served with Argentinian chimichurri and criolla salad.
Summer Shrimp Cocktail
Five plump shrimp, poached in white wine and herbs, then chilled and served with a zesty, fresh mango cocktail sauce.
Alas de Pollo
Crispy, seasoned chicken wings, tossed in our dry Cajun rub, and served with sour cream. Like it hot? Try our housemade Caribbean hot sauce, either on the side or tossed on your wings!
Patatas Bravas
A Spanish favourite - potato fries tossed in smoked paprika and topped with a chipotle aioli and scallions.
Queso Fundido
A warm, melted cheese spread served with grilled crostini. Selection changes often; ask your server for tonight's offering!
Grilled Striploin Steak
An 8oz AAA striploin, grilled to your liking, and served with a sauté of caramelized onion, mushrooms, new potato and bacon, and accompanied by refreshing criolla salad and salsa verde.
Burrito Lula
A flour tortilla stuffed with rice and refried beans, aged cheddar cheese, caramelized onions and peppers, and your choice of: jerk chicken, pulled pork, or vegetarian. Garnished with enchilado sauce, pico de gallo, and sour cream. Served with chili lime coleslaw.
Cajun Catfish Fillet
An oven-roasted, cajun-spiced catfish fillet, served atop coconutrice, and accompanied by a lively Louisiana-style creole stew.
Grilled Pork Loin
Medallions of brined, grilled pork loin, served atop a fingerling potato salad with peas, corn, black beans, peppers and scallions, accompanied by a pineapple mostarda sauce
Vegan Feijoada
Lula's veggie version of Brazil's national dish! A hearty mix of peppers, black beans, portobello mushrooms, tofu & eggplant in a savoury sauce, served atop our rice & beans and garnished with kale & orange.
The menu listed above is offered à la carte for dinner events occuring Sunday to Thursday.
Appetizers range in price from $8 to $13. Main courses vary in price from $19 to $26. And our delicious house-made desserts are $8 each.
