As per the name "The Lighthouse" I expected a restaurant that was a lot more upscale and overlooking the Bay. I was disappointed with the small size of the restaurant as well as it's lacklustre interior decor. Based around a solarium theme, the overhead glass panels looked like they hadn't been cleaned of dead flies in a very long time. It was unappetizing to look up and see that before ordering a meal. It was also very hot and humid inside. I was expecting air conditioning, which most restaurants offer. The food for the most part was good. The caesar salad was fresh. The portion of white turkey and gravy I was served was good but way too much on the plate to finish it all. The baked potato, however, was very small and dry and overcooked so that part of it was inedible. Mashed potatoes were not an option on the menu either, which is something that goes well with turkey. The bread with the meal was very dry, not fresh at all. Everything about the meal was adequate but there was nothing special about my dining experience there to make me want to return for another meal.
Room felt a bit warm, uncomfortably so. Appetizer of Smoked Oysters with Goat Cheese looked like a tin had been opened and dumped on a plate for service. it also had too much Goat Cheese for the dish. Salads had a lot of rusty lettuce which was difficult to see due to the drenching in dressing. The Seafood Medley was overcooked and tasted like it had old bay seasoning on it. Baked Potato (side to the whitefish) had a spot where something had been cut off but it still had something that looked like it had been growing inside. Overall, it was a mediocre meal that was more expensive than it should have been.
We rolled into Tobermory about an hour before close on a very rainy night. The owner was the only server in a moderately busy restaurant. Service was attentive despite the under-staffing (she had an ill worker), the bread obviously home made and yummy, and the salad was fresh and generous. Decor was dated (it would seriously benefit from RESTAURANT MAKEOVER) and the mene could have more healthful options, but overall it was a pleasant surprise given the limited options of the locale.
clean well prepared breakfast, the coffee could have been better, the chef came out to greet us.....bonus points for him
the food was exceptional, very tasty, very good eperience
the food was great and the bread was very good, nice friendly staff and a special thankyou to the chef for being so kind
This was our least favorite restaurant at our stay in Tobermory for our family. The food here was VERY OVERPRICED for what is given to you. The quality, and the preparation is very poor also. For instance, the shrimp salad, which was about $13 + tax, included lettuce with a good cup of of ranch dressing and small shrimp. The chicken stir fry which appeared to look delicous, was loaded with Teriyaki sauce so the dish was very salty, and too strong. Peppercorn steak was well done - asked for medium-rare however the sauce poured on the steak was tasty. The drinks were very very overpriced also. Ordered a medium orange juice for 2.50+tax and it was a small juice glace - about 1 cup. Lastly, it advertises A/C, however, it was fairly warm inside. So after a good hike in the bush, this wouldn't be a good choice. This wonderful experience cost us a total $133 without tip.
