Growing up on Manitoulin Island, Joseph Shawana had a couple of key influencers that would solidify his love of not only food, but the power it has to unify people. Sure, he began cooking, fascinated with French cuisine by the age of 13, but he credits both his Mom and Grandma for his early and sustained passion for food.
“I would watch them both cook all the time and that would in turn bring the whole family together,” says Joseph who adds, “food nullifies all family rifts; everyone just has a good time.” By 2006, older and ready to take the next step, Joseph moved to Toronto and brought with him experiences that drove him to share his food and cooking philosophy, style and flavour.
